OSHA 300A Forms Deadline Quickly Approaching
This is a friendly reminder that your 2016 OSHA 300A forms are due by December 15, 2017. The world of OSHA reporting can be complicated and, at the least, confusing; especially when it comes to electronic reporting. The Federal Register recently published an OSHA announcement extending the deadline for submission of Form 300A data for CY 2016. OSHA 300A, Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, is a form that must be submitted annually by employers, with more than ten employees, to report on-the-job injuries or illnesses. This is the first year many employers are required to submit the form electronically, though the form and rules regarding maintaining and posting data have not changed. Covered establishments with 20-249 employees must now electronically submit information from OSHA Form 300A. Only businesses with 10 to 19 employees may still file forms using conventional print and snail-mail technology; companies with less than 10 employees are not required to report the data to OSHA.
OSHA's Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illness Rule
This change in reporting method was outlined in detail in OSHA’s original Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illness rule, published May 12, 2016. The rule states that although data reported on Form 300A will be posted on a public website; personally-identifiable data will not be included. The forms must be kept on site for five years and must also be posted on site from February through April of the following calendar year. The public posting is reportedly an attempt to nudge employers to have a greater focus on workplace safety.
Your KERAMIDA project manager can help you navigate not only when to have your OSHA 300 data submitted, but also what should be included on the log. Many companies actually over-report injuries on their OSHA logs which results in inflated incident or frequency rates. This in turn may cause increased insurance premiums and missed business opportunities when such experience factors are included in competitive bidding evaluations.
