Life Cycle Analysis of New Energy Efficient Building Materials

Project Details:

KERAMIDA was hired by a Confidential Client to conduct a full life cycle analysis of a new and innovative type of exterior building cladding that was being developed to make buildings more energy-efficient. The new exterior building cladding being analyzed had the advantage over conventional building cladding by providing more insulation, while at the same time using more sustainable raw materials in its production. A thorough understanding of how the product was manufactured and a detailed analysis of the thermal properties of the cladding was required as part of the life cycle analysis.

KERAMIDA modeled the GHG emission reductions of multiple scenarios, accounting for:

  • Varying building types (office or residential); and

  • Varying types of utility delivery (utilities delivered by natural gas, coal fired power plants, and building installed solar panels).

The results of the life cycle analysis were presented to the Client in terms of GHG savings per square foot of cladding installed for the various scenarios. The analysis was used by the Client to apply for funding and grants through the appropriate agencies. KERAMIDA also prepared the required forms and documents to assist the Client in submitting the grant applications.
