Former Plating Line and Chlorinated Organics Release
KERAMIDA performed site assessment and remediation activities related to decommissioning of a plating line at a manufacturing facility in Indiana. Decommissioning identified a release of plating chemicals, which during assessment subsequently identified an unknown release of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (cVOCs) related to a historic degreaser. Site assessment included completion of soil borings and installation of 19 monitoring wells to determine the nature and extent of soil and groundwater impacts. Following delineation, a multi-component remedial strategy was developed and implemented to address Site impacts. Quarterly groundwater sampling, data analysis, and reporting has been conducted to monitor and document remediation effectiveness.
The remedial approach included excavation of plating line metals impacts in soil, a Multi-Phase Extraction (MPE) system for unsaturated and saturated soil and groundwater impacts, and in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) injection to address localized hotspots and reduce loading on the MPE system. A total of 5,135 lbs of REGENOX was injected in a source area. Following a successful enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) pilot-test to address a previously undiscovered source area, ERD injections were implemented in multiple areas and multiple events to address residual cVOCs impacts in groundwater. The MPE system operated for a 2-year period, removing and treating 2.93 million gallons until being discontinued in 2013 for final treatment using ERD. A series of five ERD injections using 3DMe and BDI-Plus manufactured by REGENSIS were completed by KERAMIDA in seven on- and off-site areas from 2012 to 2016. A total of 33,135 lbs and 41,209 gallons of 3DMe were injected.
Concentration of trichloroethene (TCE) in groundwater have been reduced from 9,060 ug/L to non-detect or below target cleanup levels (commercial/industrial groundwater to indoor air screening levels) for on-site and right-of-way wells and residential levels for off-site wells. Institutional controls using Environmental Restrictive Covenants (ERCs) have been applied to the Site and adjacent non-residential properties to prohibit residential use and no use of groundwater. The Site is presently under going IDEM review for remediation completion determination and ultimately site closure. KERAMIDA performed this project for a fixed price guaranteed performance basis.
