Client Spotlight: Steel Dynamics Becomes the First Steel Manufacturer to Have Their CASEI and SBET Certified by GSCC
/Steel Dynamics, Inc. is the first steel producer to have its CASEI base year emissions and SBET certified by the GSCC.
We’re thrilled to announce that Steel Dynamics, Inc. has become the first steel producer to have both their Corporate Average Steel Emissions Intensity (CASEI) base year emissions and Science-Based Emissions Target (SBET) certified by the Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC)! This achievement highlights Steel Dynamics, Inc.’s leadership and commitment to decarbonization in the steel industry. As the independent verifier, KERAMIDA, Inc. is proud to be part of the transformative journey.
Utilizing the GSCC’s Steel Climate Standard, which aligns with the Paris Agreement and the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero by 2050 Roadmap, Steel Dynamics set ambitious emissions targets, demonstrating its dedication to sustainability. These targets include a 2050 goal of 0.12 metric tons of CO₂e per ton of hot rolled steel and an interim 2030 target of 0.8 metric tons of CO₂e per ton of hot rolled steel, reflecting a 15% reduction from their 2022 baseline.
This milestone underscores Steel Dynamics’ ongoing efforts toward carbon reduction, which include the construction of a $260 million biocarbon production facility and the largest renewable product purchase agreement in North America’s steel industry. Together with their certified emissions targets, these initiatives signify substantial progress toward Steel Dynamics’ goal of producing lower-carbon steel for a sustainable future.
As the independent verifier, KERAMIDA, Inc. validated both Steel Dynamics' base year data and science-based GHG emissions targets, ensuring compliance with the GSCC’s rigorous standards.
